Respect the Chickens: Always handle the chickens with care, avoid loud noises or sudden movements, and keep fingers, toes, and shoes away from their beaks.
Follow Hygiene Protocols: Sanitize your hands before and after handling the chickens or entering the coop to protect both yourself and our girls.
Supervise Children and Guests: Ensure all children and guests are supervised at all times for their safety and the well-being of the chickens.
Use Tools Properly: Always use egg tongs for collecting eggs. Do not touch soft-shelled eggs directly; report them immediately.
Scrap Donations: Only bring approved scraps. Avoid avocados, raw onions, raw potato skins, dairy, eggs, garlic, uncooked beans, uncooked rice, or spoiled food.
Report Issues Promptly: Contact the Chicken Hotline at (512) 887-8464 to report emergencies like injured or missing chickens, coop damage, or other urgent concerns.
Commitment: Notify the Chicken Committee in advance if you cannot fulfill your shift.
Complete Tasks Thoroughly: Complete all tasks during your shift, ensuring the chickens and coop are well cared for.
Stay Informed: Regularly check emails for updates or seasonal instructions, as tasks may vary by season.
Practice Biosecurity: Wear clean clothes and shoes not exposed to other birds. Avoid handling other poultry on the same day you volunteer.
Fill Out the Reporting Form: Log egg counts, coop conditions, and any issues after every shift. This data is crucial for maintaining the coop and supporting educational projects.
Adhere to Rules: Depending on the severity, violations may result in removal from the program.
Sanitize Hands and Wipe Feet: UUse hand sanitizer and wipe feet before entering the coop.
Let the Chickens Out: Open the coop door and prop it securely.
Check Food, Water, and Grit: Refill as needed.
Clean Scrap Bowls: Empty old scraps into the compost, clean the bowls with vinegar spray and a brush, and add new approved scraps, if available.
Inspect the Coop and Perimeter: Walk around the coop to check for damage, holes, or trash. Report any issues immediately.
Collect Eggs: Use the egg tongs to gather eggs and place them in the holder in the shed. Soft-shelled eggs should be reported immediately.
Fill Out the Reporting Form: Log egg counts, coop conditions, and any issues after every shift.
Sanitize Hands and Wipe Feet: Use hand sanitizer and wipe feet before entering the coop.
Check Food, Water, and Grit: Refill as needed to prepare for the night.
Guide Chickens Inside: Use mealworms to lure the chickens back into the coop. Shake the mealworm bag, ring the dinner bell, and pour mealworms in the bowl as the chickens enter. Guide any remaining ones in. Most chickens will roost naturally by 5:45 PM.
Inspect the Coop and Perimeter: Walk around the coop to check for damage, holes, or trash. Report any issues immediately.
Close and Lock the Coop: Once all chickens are inside, securely lock the coop door.
Sanitize Hands and Secure the Gate: Sanitize your hands and ensure the gate is locked.
Fill Out the Reporting Form: Log egg counts, coop conditions, and any issues after every shift.
Winter:
Ensure all coop doors are secure to prevent drafts.
Check water frequently to ensure it isn’t frozen.
Chickens stay warm naturally but can be given black oil sunflower seeds or cracked corn to help them generate additional heat.
Summer:
Open vent doors to increase airflow.
Add ice to water buckets to keep them cool.
Offer frozen fruit like watermelon, berries, or grapes to help the chickens regulate their body temperature.
The chicken coop is in the Primary Playground. Make sure to close the gate behind you. Families, if it is during the school day, make sure to check in with the HS Front Desk to get a badge.
