At Meridian, our Chicken Tenders program is a shining example of how small, everyday actions can create a big environmental impact. Through waste reduction, natural resource use, and educational opportunities, our flock plays a vital role in promoting sustainability across our community.
Our chickens consume approved food scraps from Mays Cafeteria and other sources, significantly cutting down on food waste.
Why It Matters:
Food waste in landfills produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. By repurposing scraps as chicken feed, we keep waste out of landfills and reduce methane emissions.
Chicken droppings and food scraps are composted to create nutrient-rich fertilizer. This compost is then used in our school gardens to grow healthy plants.
Why It Matters:
Chemical fertilizers can harm the environment. By using natural compost, we enhance soil health, conserve resources, and reduce pollution.
Our chickens lay fresh, unwashed eggs that are available to families for a $2 donation.
Why It Matters:
Local egg production reduces the environmental impact of transporting store-bought eggs, often shipped from miles away.
Chickens naturally eat bugs, weeds, and other pests in their environment.
Why It Matters:
By letting our chickens roam, we reduce the need for chemical pesticides and herbicides, which can harm local ecosystems.
Our Chicken Tenders program is not just about care—it’s about education. Here’s how we use the flock to teach sustainable practices:
Hands-On Lessons:
Students learn about composting, food waste reduction, and natural resource cycles through direct interaction with the chickens and their environment.
Agriculture Education:
Chickens provide a gateway for students to learn about food systems, biology, and the importance of local food sources.
Environmental Responsibility:
By caring for the chickens, volunteers and students develop an understanding of how individual actions contribute to a healthier planet.
Food Waste Saved: Each chicken can eat approximately 1/4 pound of food scraps daily, meaning our flock diverts hundreds of pounds of waste from landfills annually.
Egg-Laying Power: On average, a hen lays 5–7 eggs per week, providing local, sustainable food for our community.
Low Carbon Footprint: Chickens produce significantly fewer emissions than other livestock, making them an eco-friendly protein source.
Volunteer for Shifts:
Help with ensuring our chickens remain healthy and productive.
Bring Approved Food Scraps:
Approved scraps keep the chickens happy and waste out of the trash. (No onions, garlic, avocados, or spoiled food!)
Spread Awareness:
Share the Chicken Tenders story with others to inspire sustainable practices at home and in the community. We would love to include your Meridian group/class in our Educational Programs!
