A PSA From Our Meridian Chicken Vet Tech for Trained Volunteers:
Our girls are doing so well! Thank you for your continued love, care, and feeding—they are thriving.
However, we want to share an important update regarding avian influenza (bird flu). This highly pathogenic virus has been found in Louisiana and some parts of Texas. It can spread through wild birds or other chickens, and unfortunately, if one chicken contracts the virus, the entire flock must be eradicated.
To protect our flock, we need to strengthen our biosecurity practices:
If you have chickens at home, wear shoes and clean clothes that have not been in contact with your own chickens when visiting the Meridian coop.
When you return home, change your clothes and shoes before interacting with your own chickens to avoid cross-contamination.
Please remember to fill out the Chicken Tender form after each visit. This is incredibly helpful in maintaining the health and well-being of the flock.
Symptoms of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) in Chickens:
Sudden death without prior signs of illness.
Lethargy: Lack of energy and appetite.
Respiratory signs: Panting, nasal discharge, sneezing, coughing, or difficulty breathing.
Swelling: Of the eyelids, comb, wattles, and shanks.
Discoloration: Purple discoloration of the wattles, comb, and legs.
Egg production: Reduced egg production or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs.
Other symptoms: Droopy appearance, ruffled feathers, bruising, diarrhea, unusual head/neck posture, incoordination, inability to walk or stand, tremors, twisted necks, paralyzed wings, laying down and pedaling.
Symptoms can vary greatly and progress quickly. If you notice any of these symptoms, please report them immediately. The sooner we can administer treatment, the better their chances.

We use a mix of coffee grounds and sand in the coop to keep our chickens safe and the environment clean.
Rodent Deterrent: The strong scent of coffee grounds helps keep rodents away naturally.
Moisture Control: Sand absorbs moisture, keeping the coop dry and healthy for our flock.
Easy Cleanup: The mix makes it easy to spot and scoop droppings, ensuring a fresh and clean space.
Sustainable Practice: By repurposing used coffee grounds, we reduce waste while caring for our chickens.
The form helps us:
Track egg production.
Monitor coop cleanliness and supply levels.
Ensure the health and well-being of the chickens.
Provide real-time data for classes studying sustainability.
Please complete the form after every visit!
